One-to-one mentorships for horse trainers and equine behaviour professionals

Early in my career, I really struggled to find supportive colleagues who were also seeing horse behaviour cases. â€‹Even today, the number of us working in this field is so small that it can feel isolating.  You might have solid body-language reading skills, a good grasp of learning theory, and real-world horse training experience, yet still find yourself second-guessing a case or wanting deeper insight into what might be happening.

Through three different 1:1 mentorship services, I support a small number of horse trainers and equine behaviour professionals each year. Each service focuses on understanding the root causes of behaviour problems and applying low-stress, evidence-based training and behaviour modification techniques with confidence.

I provide non-judgmental, practical support to help you feel less alone, build your skills, and grow confidently in your horse behaviour consulting career.

Mentorships

Mentorships for equine professionals - $273.00 CAD/month

1:1 mentorship in low-stress, evidence-based horse behaviour work for experienced trainers.

Mentorship is open to trainers who are already proficient in teaching naive horses new behaviours (e.g., accepting touch, halter training, under-saddle work, trailer loading, standing tied) and have a baseline knowledge of learning theory.

I can help you enhance your assessment skills and use of low-stress, evidence-based behaviour change techniques, so that you can confidently apply this knowledge to your caseload. I also appreciate that sometimes our human clients aren’t ready to use kinder methods, or that you may face pushback for recommending low-stress approaches. So, together, we’ll also explore how to effectively shape both horse and human behaviour, compassionately.

No matter your training background, I offer non-judgmental, supportive mentorship. I particularly enjoy working with trainers from traditional, horsemanship, or positive-reinforcement backgrounds who want support in understanding the ethical uses, risks, and limitations of negative reinforcement and positive punishment.

Historically, my mentorships have focused on understanding horse behaviour, recognizing signs of fear, anxiety, and stress, identifying root causes of common behaviour problems, and applying low-stress, evidence-based behaviour modification techniques. However, I am flexible to the needs of my colleagues and learning opportuntiies can vary.

This option is the perfect step to take if you're looking to:

✅ Deepen your understanding of horse behaviour and low-stress behaviour modification techniques, so that you can confidently assess and address horse behaviour problems.

✅ Better navigate situations where human clients may resist or challenge kinder approaches, so that you can recommend and implement low-stress methods.

✅ Strengthen your professional skills and develop your career, so that you can expand your impact and work with greater credibility and expertise.

CA H

Constructional approach mentoring - $252.00 CAD
1:1 mentorship in low-stress, evidence-based horse behaviour work for experienced trainers.

If you’ve heard about the constructional approach with horses but aren’t sure how to apply it, I can help.

Whether you're working with a horse afraid of the trailer, a feral equine, or herd-bound horses, this ethical, effective, evidence-based approach focuses on building desirable behaviours rather than relying on punishment to address unwanted behaviours. It’s particularly effective for fear-based or challenging cases, including situations where standard food-based counter-conditioning may not be suitable. As a pleasant side effect, even skeptical clients, new to low-stress training, are quickly won over as they witness their horse learning and improving through this approach.

Through this one-off mentorship, I provide practical guidance on when, why, and how to use constructional approaches in real-world horse training. Designed for horse trainers, behaviour consultants, and equine professionals, this program equips you with the knowledge and skills to ethically and effectively support horses with anxiety, fear, or unwanted behaviours.

This option is the perfect step to take if you're looking to:

✅ Learn how to apply a constructional approach with horses, so that you can ethically and effectively address challenging cases.

✅ Gain practical, hands-on strategies for building desirable behaviors without relying on punishment, so that you can support horses  - and their owners - safely and respectfully.

✅ Strengthen your professional skills and confidence, so that you can implement evidence-based methods in real-world training applications, expanding your impact as a horse professional.

Why choose me to help

lauren and viveza portrait (3) (1).jpg

When you care about addressing horse behavior problems in ways that align with your ethics, it can feel daunting. You want to make meaningful progress with horses while staying true to your values, and feel confident in your decisions and approach.

Early in my career, I struggled to find mentorship opportunities or guidance on how to do just this. I often felt alone, and that I was sometimes just 'experimenting' as I went.

While things usually worked out for me and my clients, looking back, I can see how having a mentor at points in my career would have been invaluable. It would have saved me time, money, and yes, even some tears.

With this hard-earned knowledge,  years of professional experience and specialized training in clinical animal behavior, I now mentor other equine professionals. I provide practical guidance, tools, and frameworks so you can solve problems effectively, stay aligned with your ethics, and grow your skills and professional success.

You'll get the most out of working with me if:

  • You believe that behaviour change is a process, not a one-time event, for both horses and their owners. All deserve to be met where they are at, and treated kindly as we help them learn new ways of behaving.

  • You appreciate that addressing behaviour issues in horses is often nuanced and complex, and there isn't one 'gold star' method that can be applied to all situations, horses, or owners.

  • You are looking for professional support, clarity, and confidence, not judgment or rigid rules

  • You can respect colleagues who may work differently from you, and can engage in thoughtful, professional discourse that allows for disagreement while still ending in mutual respect.

  • You appreciate that every time we help someone see or do things differently, even if it's far from 'perfect', it improves the welfare of horses. And that matters.

I've consulted with Lauren on a number of difficult cases, with both client horses and some I've taken on myself.

Her advice is thorough, detailed and clear, and considerate of both the horse and owner. Lauren is my go-to consultant when I hit a roadblock or want to double-check my thought process before proceeding with a challenging situation.
