When horses are afraid of the farrier, the stakes feel high. You worry that someone could get hurt, and you sense that your horse is stressed too.
Early in my career, I was taught that horses who were difficult for the farrier were just disrespectful, and typical training advice was to 'get the horse's respect'.
Over time, I learned that this perspective didn’t capture the full picture. Being difficult for the farrier often has multiple causes, and addressing it effectively means understanding what a horse is experiencing and why. Using dominance-based methods, I missed underlying causes and struggled to see lasting results.
With more experience and specialized training in clinical animal behaviour, I now approach fear of the farrier in horses differently. I focus on understanding and addressing root causes, using low-stress, evidence-based techniques, while supporting both horse and owner. This way, farrier phobia is managed safely, the horse’s welfare is prioritized, and meaningful change is possible.
